Has attended the University of Parma Institute of Neurology since April 1996, collaborating with Prof. Gian Camillo Manzoni on research projects and on outpatient care at the Institute's Headache Centre.
Has been actively involved in a cluster headache pathophysiology research project sponsored by Italy's Ministry for University Education and Scientific and Technological Research (MURST PRIN 1998), investigating possible CNS involvement in cluster headache through a recording of patients pain thresholds by means of a computerized pressure algometer.
Was a co-investigator in some national and international drug trial protocols.
Is a scientific member of the advisory board of the journal Confinia Cephalalgica.
Is a member of the Italian Neurological Society (SIN) and of the Italian Neurological Association for the Research of Headache (ANIRCEF).

Dr. Torelli's research lines cover the whole spectrum of headache disorders. She has studied the epidemiology of cluster headache, the behaviour and personality traits of cluster headache patients and the relation between cluster headache, smoking and traumatic head injury. She has extensively investigated the relation between migraine with aura and interatrial defects. She has also approached aspects of the pathophysiology and treatment of tension type-headache. She was actively involved in the planning and implementation of the study 'Epidemiology of the major primary headache types in the general population' She contributed to developing a European diagnostic diary.
