Course contents summary
Nature as mother and as stepmother: optimism and pessimism in Lucretius’ poem. Lucretius’ poem fluctuates between the optimistic faith in Epicurus’ doctrine and a pessimistic view arising from the countless forms of human suffering in the world. This can be appreciated in the fifth book, where nature appears sometimes as good mother and sometimes as cruel stepmother.
