Learning outcomes of the course unit
The aim of the course is that the students will acquire proper knowledge
of legal English which is necessary both in the field of research and in the
In order to sit for the Legal English exam the student needs to have
passed the English language exam (Abilità linguistica)
Course contents summary
The course will focus on the analysis of the fundamental notions of
English Criminal Law (with particular attention to the legal vocabulary)
and on the analysis of an article on Scottish Criminal Law.

- "Dictionary" on "Criminal Law"
- General Principles. The Sources of Scots Criminal law
Interactive classes. The first class will focus on the analysis of the main
terms used in the field of Criminal Law; in the second class an article of
Scottish Criminal Law will be studied; during the third class the students
will watch a video on Scottish Criminal Law.
Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam. The student will receive three tests (one for the Criminal
Law module; one for the Civil Law module; one for the International Law
module). Every test consists in ten multiple choice questions. In order to
pass the exam the student needs to pass all three tests (the student will
pass the test if he doesn’t make more than two mistakes in each test).
The questions are aimed at assessing:
• The comprehension of legal concepts in English;
• The ability to use English legal terms within a discourse
The students who pass either the exam of Economics and Law, or the
exam of European and Comparative Criminal Law, or the exam of
European and International Labour Law will automatically acquire the 3
credits of Legal English
