Learning objectives

The educational goal of the course is to develop in the student the capacities to identify, recognize and interpret the signs and symptoms (objective and medical history-related) of the disease in question with a view to drawing up a clinical picture. The course also aims to develop the skills required for establishing effective communication with the patient and his/her relatives, an essential factor as regards information directed at the patient him/herself, as well as the capacity to identify the spheres and limits of the non specialist physician’s competence in the treatment of diseases of the Locomotor Apparatus

<br />SYLLABUS OF THE INTEGRATED COURSE IN: DISEASES OF THE LOCOMOTOR APPARATUS – SSD: Rheumatology (MED/16), Diseases of the Locomotor Apparatus (MED/33), Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (MED/34),  (IVth year, 2nd term )<br />ORTHOPEDICS AND TRAUMATOLOGY: Congenital dysplasia of the hip (definition, etiopathogenesis, preluxation, full dislocation, inveterate dislocation, principles of orthopedic and surgical treatment).<br />Congenital clubfoot (talipes equinovarus, talipes calcaneovalgus pronatus, metatarsus varus, reflex valgus flatfoot). Pes cavus, flatfoot. Hallux valgus. Metatarsalgia. Torticollis (congenital bone, obstetric pyogenic, torticollis secondary to various etiologies). Juvenile metaphyseal dystrophy or Osteochondritis (Perthes disease, epiphysiolisis). Scoliosis (congenital scoliosis of the bone, acquired scoliosis, juvenile idiopathic scoliosis. Diagnosis, clinical pictures and principles of treatment). Arthrosis (general details, classification, pathological anatomy, clinical pictures and radiographs). Vertebral arthrosis (arthrosis of the hip, arthrosis of the knee). Disc-related pain (lumbago, lumbar ischialgia, lumbar crural pain, cervicobrachialgia. Principles of treatment). General details on primary and secondary tumours.<br />General principles of traumatology (General details on contusions, distortions, dislocations and fractures. Clinical signs of fractures, compound fractures, joint fractures, epiphysiolysis and detachment of the pituitary gland, epiphysiolisis, stress fractures, pathological fractures. Recurrent or habitual dislocations). - Fracture healing processes. - Delay in union and pseudoarthrosis; fracture and dislocation complications. Main fractures of the limbs and vertebral-medullary fractures. Femoral neck fractures. Capsuloligamentous lesions of the knee and meniscal lesions. Carpal tunnel syndrome. Dupuytren’s disease – Arthrosis of the trapezium-metacarpal joint (or rhizarthrosis). Hypertrophic degenerative arthrosis of the hand. Trigger finger. Rheumatoid hand . Carpal scaphoid fractures. De quervain )<br /><br />PRINCIPLES OF PHYSICAL MEDICINE AND REHABILITATION: Instrumental physiotherapy: thermoterapy, cryotherapy, electrotherapy, T.E.N.S., diadynamic currents, laser therapy, magnetotherapy, ultrasound, ESWT. Main rehabilitation methods: Passive assisted-active kinesitherapy, ergotherapy,  mechanotherapy, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitations, massotherapy. Rehabilitation programmes for chronic-degenerative and traumatic diseases of the locomotor apparatus.  <br /><br />RHEUMATOLOGY. Classification of Rheumatic Diseases Inflammatory arthropathies: clinical pictures, differential diagnosis and treatment: rheumatoid arthritis, seronegative spondylo arthritis (Ankylosing Spondylitis, psoriasic arthropathy, Reiter’s syndrome). - Connectivitis: clinical pictures, differential diagnosis and treatment, L.E.S., Sclerodermia, Dermatopolymyositis, Vasculitis : clinical pictures, differential diagnosis and treatment: polymyalgia rheumatica, temporal arthritis. Osteoarthrosis:  clinical pictures, differential diagnosis and treatment. - Microcrystalline arthropathies: clinical pictures, differential diagnosis and treatment. - Extra-articular rheumatism: clinical pictures, differential diagnosis and treatment. - Fibromyalgia: clinical pictures, differential diagnosis and therapy. Osteoporosis: Paget's disease of bone. The algodystrophic syndrome (neuro-algodystrophy). - Treatment of rheumatic diseases: NSAIDs, Steroids, Background treatments, Chondrometabolics
