Learning objectives
Neurology: Students will acquire knowledge that will enable them to perform a complete neurological objective testing and to correctly interpret neurological signs and symptoms as either anatomically and functionally normal or pathological. They will also learn notions that will enable them to define syndromes related to pathological modifications of specific structures of the central, peripheral and autonomic nervous systems (e.g., pyramidal syndrome, extrapyramidal syndrome, etc.).
Neurosurgery:The course is aimed at a basic understanding of the major diseases of neurosurgical interest: CNS tumours, with special focus on their epidemiology, symptoms and treatment principles; head and spinal injuries, with respect to pathophysiology, emergency and clinical management of post-traumatic focal and diffuse lesions; cerebral haemorrhaging, with a definition of primary and secondary causes and with strict reference to differential diagnosis; spondyloarthrosis, epidemiology and clinical management of lumbar/cervical herniated disk, hydrocephalus and syringomyelia; adult normal-pressure hydrocephalus and differential diagnosis with dementia.
Nursing sciences and neuropsychiatric and rehabilitation techniques: 1. Identifying rehabilitation principles for integrated nursing and rehabilitative care; 2. Describing rehabilitative interventions aimed at overall health recovery and at quality of life improvement in patients with chronic disease and disability and their relatives; 3. Identifying both independent and joint areas of action for nurses and rehabilitators.
Neuroimaging:Students will learn the various imaging procedures and indications. They will also learn how to establish a diagnosis for the different CNS and PNS disorders and how to evaluate risks, costs and benefits of diagnostic imaging techniques.
Physical medicine and rehabilitation:The course is aimed at providing students with basic notions about physiatric evaluation and rehabilitation programmes for neurological disorders.

Prerequisites

In order to take the exam for the integrated course of neurology, students must have passed the exams of biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, general pathology, medical semeiotics, and pharmacology.
