Learning objectives

<br />The student must acquire information necessary to:<br /> <br />Evaluate normal health conditions, nutrition, and pathologies in newborns, recognizing conditions that require the intervention of a specialist; evaluate the normal phases of physical, cognitive, and psycho-relational growth in healthy children and adolescents;<br />recognize the general needs of treatment in a sick child, the principal congenital diseases with early or late clinical manifestations, and the most frequent pediatric pathologies.<br /> <br /> 

Prerequisites

The course is distributed over 2 semesters (between 5th and 6th year). Obligatory attendance.

Course unit content

<br />Pediatrics GS (SSD Med/38. CFU 6).<br /> <br />The healthy newborn, physical examination and physiological parameters. Breast-feeding. Feeding during the first year of life. Neonatal infections. Respiratory distress syndrome in newborns. Jaundice of the newborn. Newborn hemolytic disease. Neonatal pulmonary semeiotics. Pneumonia and bronchiolitis. Asthma. Mucoviscidosis. Acute and chronic nose-throat pathologies.   <br />Diagnosis and treatment of type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. Principles in therapy and follow-up of children and adolescents with diabetes. Diagnosis and prospective treatment of the pre-clinical state of diabetes in childhood. Polyuria. <br /> <br />Neuropsychiatry (SSD Med/39, CFU 0,5). Neurological examination of the newborn. Convulsions in the child. Cerebral palsy. Epilepsy. Language, behaviour, and development disorders in children.<br /> <br />Medical genetics (SSD Med/03, CFU 1).  the risk of recurrence. Relationship degree. Most frequent monogenetic diseases (congenital metabolic alterations, muscle-skeletal pathologies, brain and nervous system, signal transduction,  transport). Numeric and structural chromosomal mutations.
