Integrated course unit module: MEDICAL-SURGICAL EMERGENCIES

Learning objectives

<br /><br />The student must achieve the ability to evaluate clinical emergency requiring the intervention of the specialist in the areas of critical care, surgery, trauma, and cardiology. <br />The student will achieve competence in recognizing main diseases with urgent implications for the prognosis of the patient, describing the process for a correct diagnosis and basic treatment of main emergencies. <br />The course will be focused on the concepts of Triage and early diagnosis based on international guidelines and reccommendations proper of each specific area.

<br /><br />Cardiac arrest: etiology, pathophysiology, epidemiology and treatment.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br />Acute myocardial infarction.<br />Acute renal insufficiency.<br />Circulation and respiratory tract and Advanced Life Support. <br />Cardiopulmonary resuscitation<br />Principles of mechanical ventilation .<br />Shock: etiology, pathophysiology, epidemiology and treatment<br />Trauma patients. <br />Coma and cerebral death, organ donation. <br />Poisoning and intoxication<br />Monitoring the critical patient<br />Pulmonary diseases: ARDS, pulmonary embolism, edema,<br />Cardiac arrhythmias: etiology, pathophysiology, epidemiology and treatment.<br />Acid-Base balance<br /> <br />

Teaching methods

<br /><br />The teaching methodology will be based on frontal lessons as wll as on the analysis of clinical scerarios with practical simulation of the diagnostic process and basis of treatment. The final evaluation will be based on an oral examination with the analysis of a clinical scenario together with one of the teachers. <br />
