Integrated course unit module: DYNAMIC BIOCHEMISTRY AND HUMAN SYSTEMATICS

Learning objectives

<br />To show knowledge and understanding of the majormetabolic pathways, the molecular mechanisms of regulation, the generalprinciples of metabolic energy homeostasis and cell plasticity. To be able toresolve problems concerning the metabolic use of major food constituent in tissues.To be able to integrate carbohydrate, lipid and protein metabolism in a healthyindividual from a global and holistic point of view. To be able to resolveproblems concerning the endocrine regulation of the metabolic functions of theorganism, the metabolic coordination and the biochemical correlations betweenorgans and tissues under normal conditions and following hormonestimulation. 

Prerequisites

<br />It is mandatory to pass the following exams 1)Chemistry and Propaedeutic Biochemistry and 2) Histology before being allowedto take the exam of Biochemistry.<br /> 

Course unit content

<br /><br />Bioenergetics and oxidative metabolism. Thetricarboxylic acid cycle. Electron transport chain. Oxidative phosphorylation.Glycolysis: the glycolytic pathway and regulation. Gluconeogenesis.Glycogenolysis and glycogenesis. Pentose phosphate pathway. Oxidation of fattyacids and aminoacids; metabolism of ketone bodies. <br />Glycogen metabolism: synthesis, breakdown andregulation. Metabolism of cholesterol and plasma lipoproteins. Lipolysis andlipogenesis. Metabolism of ammonia. Transport of nitrogen to liver and kidney.Synthesis and degradation of amino acids. Iron and heme metabolism. Purine andpyrimidine nucleotide metabolism. Endocrine metabolism: amines, peptidehormones, steroid hormones. Mechanism of hormone action. Hormonal control ofmetabolism.<br />Principles of nutrition. Digestion and absorption ofbasic nutritional constituents. Biochemistry of nutrients. Macro- andmicronutrients. Recommended levels of assumption of major nutrients (LARN orRDA): general principles and epidemiological aspects. General formulation ofdiets. Assessment of nutritional status in clinical practice. Principal typesof dietary regimes used in medicine. Food as vector of nutrients,anti-nutrients and not nutrients.<br />
