Learning objectives

To be able to discuss themechanisms of delivery and expression of the genetic information at molecularlevel.

Prerequisites

<br />It is mandatory to pass the following exams 1)Chemistry and Propaedeutic Biochemistry and 2) Histology before being allowedto take the exam of Biochemistry.

Course unit content

<br />Molecular bases of thehereditary information. Composition and structure of nucleic acids. DNAsynthesis. Telomerases. DNA repair mechanisms and correlations with humanpathologies, cell aging and cancer. RNA: structure, function, transcription, maturation. Definition and propertiesof Genetic Code. Protein synthesis, regulation of gene expression andpost-translational modification of proteins. Signal transduction pathways.Apoptosis. Cell differentiation. Cloning. <br />
