Learning outcomes of the course unit
The course is designed to give the students the methods for studying the morphological and functional organization of the human body at the different levels of organization: the cell, the tissues, the organs, the gross anatomy of the human body.
Course contents summary
The cell and its components: plasma membrane, cytoplasm, Golgi's apparatus, endoplasmic reticulum, mitocondria, nucleus.
Formation and organisation of tissuses.
Epithelial tissue and glands: classification, localisation and morphofunctional correlations.
Connective tissue: classification, localisation and morphofunctional correlations; ossification; haemopoiesis; blood cells and platelets.
Muscle tissue: classification, localisation and morphofunctional correlations.
Nerve tissue: classification and localisation of cell types.
Histological specimens: staining and analysis techniques.
Analysis of histological sections by light microscopy.
Muscolo-skeletal System: structural organization (cytological and molecular) of bone, cartilage and muscle. Generalities on bones, joints and major muscle groups. Macroscopic anatomy of the skull, trunk and limbs. Macroscopic and functional anatomy of joints of spine, shoulder girdle, elbow, wrist, coxo-femoral and knee.
Cardiovascular System: cellular and molecular organization of endothelium. Macroscopic and microscopic and anatomy of the heart, coronary vessels, heart valves. Structure of arteries, veins and capillaries. Topography of the main arteries and veins. Macro and microscopic, molecular and functional anatomy of haemopoietic organs (Bone Marrow) and primary and secondary lymphoid organs (Thymus, Spleen, lymph nodes).
Digestive system: general organisation: the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, intestine, large intestine. The liver. The pancreas. The peritoneum.
Respiratory System: microscopic and macroscopic functional anatomy of airways and lungs.
Urinary System: macro-microscopic and functional anatomy of the kidney. Cytology and molecular anatomy of the nephro.
Endocrine System: morphology, architecture and structure of the endocrine glands: adeno and neuro-hypophysis, epiphyses, thyroid, parathyroid, widespread neuro-endocrine system, adrenalgland, endocrine pancreas.
Neuroanatomy: general organization of the nervous system.
