INTRODUCTION TO QUANTUM MECHANICS
Learning outcomes of the course unit
The purpose of the course is to provide basic concepts of quantum mechanics, illustrated by the simplest applications.
Calculus, mathematical methods for physics, classical mechanics.
Course contents summary
Classical physics at the end of the XIX century. Blackbody radiation. Photoelectric effect. Atomic models of Rutherford and Bohr. Wave and particle aspects of radiation and matter.
Wavefunction, Schrodinger equation. Axioms of quantum mechanics. Heisenberg uncertainty principle. Applications (free particle, particle in a box, potential well, potential barrier, tunnel effect, harmonic oscillator). Schrodinger equation for a central potential. Hydrogen atom. Spin.
