Learning objectives

to provide: a) approach to the patients with malignant and nonmalignant hematological diseases; b) basic information on genetic and molecular biology; c) Interpretation of the diagnostic reports; d)principles of therapy and its complications.

Causes, clinical and pathological aspects of the blood diseases; severe aplastic anemia; myelodysplastic syndromes; leukemia; lymphomas; monoclonal gammopathies; chronic lymphoproliferative disorders; chronic myeloproliferative disorders; inherited and acquired anemias; thrombocytopenia; stem cell transplantation; Therapeutic modalities and principles.

the blood system: anatomy and physiology. classification of the hematological disorders. severe aplastic anemia and other cytopenic syndromes. congenital and aquired hemolytic anemia. iron deficiency anemia. megaloblastic anemia. myelodysplastic syndromes. acute and chronic leukemia. chronic lymphoproliferative disorders. chronic myeloproliferative disorders. monoclonal gammopathies. biology and clinical uses of the hematopoietic stem cell. autologous and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. principles of therapy.

Teaching methods

lectures with slide presentation; training in physical examination, in morphologic observation of the blood and marrow films; clinical rounds in the hematology unit and journal club meetings.

Assessment methods and criteria

oral, sometimes in combination with a questionnaire or a short written report. the students are asked to provide a brief report focusing on the most relevant issues of each querie.the final vote includes both written and oral performance.
