Learning objectives

The main goal of the course is to provide students with the means to improve their knowledge and their research skills in European and Comparative Criminal Law, through the analysis of case law and scholarly opinions on the same topics.

Prerequisites

To take this course, Italian students must have successfully passed the B1 Level English Exam and to have successfully passed Istituzioni di diritto privato, Istituzioni di diritto romano and Diritto penale 1.

Course unit content

Topics pertaining both the general part and the special part of Criminal law will be analyzed during the course, from a Comparative law and European Law point of view. Among other topics, decisions from the European Court of Human Rights will be analyzed.

Bibliography

There is no formal textbook for this course. Students should use notes took in class plus the cases and materials that will be given in class.

Teaching methods

Lectures and seminars. The classes will be structured as to encourage the students’ active participation and an incisive analysis of case law material provided.

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral exam in English. The questions will aim to ascertain that the student correctly understood the materials provided in class and to verify the understanding of the basic concepts of the subject taught. No intermediate tests are planned.
