CONTEMPORARY ITALIAN LITERATURE
OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE
The aims of teaching is the acquisition of contemporary literary-historical data as well as the ability to grasp the idiosyncratic textual features within the contemporary world itself, especially in its particular secular development.
COURSE CONTENTS SUMMARY
After completing a substantial stylistic and formal ground review, with particular attention to the "sign" (according to F. de Saussure) and the factors / functions of linguistic communication (according to R. Jakobson), the lectures will focus on the Twentieth-Century literary forms, as well as on idiosyncratic features of the Twentieth-Century writing. Furthermore, the course will exemplarily consider issues and problems within Italian literature, encompassing the lapse of time beginning from the Unification of Italy until the 1960's, with particular emphasis on the Twentieth-Century poetry and it’s metric structure (related to the centuries-old Italian tradition).
The students will be requested to study 12 among “major” Italian contemporary authors (Giovanni Verga, Giosue Carducci, Giovanni Pascoli, Gabriele D'Annunzio, Luigi Pirandello, Italo Svevo , Umberto Saba, Giuseppe Ungaretti, Eugenio Montale, Carlo Emilio Gadda, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Italo Calvino), along with the history of contemporary literature up to the 1960’s (the Neo-avant-garde). Concerning the fundamentals of the twentieth-century poetry, the essential notions about poetic technique, genre and form plus the analysis of its internal developments, will be required.

This text-book is essential for the preparation: the introductory pages, each ”technical” column along with chapters on metrics - from the first twentieth-century metrical infringement phenomenon towards the free verse, i.e. pp. 1-254 (of course, reading selected chapters from the remaining part of the book - considering literary genres, maxima of the Twentieth Century Italian literature - is by no means forbidden).
ASSESSMENT METHODS AND CRITERIA
The first part of the course (module A - 6 cfu) will be put through orally.
In case the module A is joined with module B (12 cfu exam), the module A is put through a written closed-ended test (appropriately illustrated during the module A).
