The aim of this module is to provide students with basic knowledge of sensing devices and transducers, automatic control techniques, and signal processing in the field of mechatronic applications.
The students are expected to be familiar with the notions of mathematics, physics, electrical and electronic circuits taught in the 1st level degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Course contents summary
1. Linear system models
Building blocks of electro-mechanical systems. Linearity and linearization. Dynamic response of 1st and 2nd order systems.
2. Transfer functions
The Laplace transform. Transfer functions of 1st and 2nd order systems. Series-connected systems. Systems with feedback loops. Stability.
3. Frequency response
Phasors. Frequency response. Bode plots and Bode’s stability criterion.
4. Closed-loop controls
On-off control. Proportional-Integral-Differential (PID) controller. Digital controllers. Adaptive control.
5. Sensors and transducers
Displacement, position and proximity. Velocity and motion. Force. Fluid pressure. Flow and level of liquids. Temperature. Optical sensors.
6. Signal conditioning.
Operational amplifiers. Protection. Filtering. Wheatstone bridge. Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM).
7. Digital signals.
Analog and digital sgnals. D/A and A/D converters. Multiplexer. Data acquisition. Digital Signal Processing (DSP).
8. Digital logics
Logic gates. Combinatory circuits. Sequential circuits.
