Learning objectives

The course deals with theory and practice of hydraulic defences. The main theoretical topics concern steady flows and flood routing in prismatic and natural rivers and sediment transport principles. The second part of the course concerns flood control by means of structural and non-structural approaches.

Prerequisites

Hydraulics, Hydrology.

Course unit content

Steady flow. Flood routing. Sediment transport. Torrent control. Flood control.

Full programme

Steady flows: Classification and analysis of flow profiles in prismatic channels and natural rivers. Mild and steep slope channels; sub- and supercritical flows. Hydraulic jump and its location; flows through bridge piers and constrictions.
Flood routing: Hydrologic unsteady flow models: theory, parameter calibration and application of Muskingum method. Hydraulic unsteady flow models: De Saint Venant hypotheses and equations; initial and boundary conditions for sub- and supercritical flows; methods of solution: characteristics, finite difference (explicit and implicit), Courant-Fredrichs-Levy stability criterion.
Sediment transport. Sediment grain size and properties. Threshold of sediment motion: Shield’s diagram. Bed load estimation formulas.
Torrent control. Aggradation and degradation in natural streams. Equilibrium slope. Crossing structures: check dams, sills. Design and verification of structures.
Flood control. Structural measures: land reforestation, river embankments, stream corrections, canal spillways, diversions, reservoirs, flood control reservoirs. Non-structural measures: flood hazard maps.
