GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS
Learning outcomes of the course unit
The aim of the course is to introduce the students to the use of the Geographic Information Systems (GIS). After an analysis of the main general characteristics of a GIS, the specific characteristics of GRASS (Geographic Resources Analysis Support System), an open source free software system, are considered. As the best way to learn and understand a GIS is through its use, the course consists mainly in exercises of encreasing difficulties, including the data acquisition and the 3D menagement. At the end of the course, some examples of advanced use of GRASS for the construction of Landslide Susceptibility maps and landslide movement simulation are illustred.
