Course unit structured in the following modules:

Learning objectives
Provide students with basic theoretical/practical elements to enable them to take a systematic and rational approach to diagnosis and oral rehabilitation therapy with fixed and removable prostheses, both partial and total, so that they are able to design and realise the most commonly used prosthetic devices.

Prerequisites

Have passed all the previous years' exams and the exam in Periodontology and Implantology

Course unit content

Diagnosis and treatment plan. Integration of the concepts examined during the 1st course together with elements of periodontology connected with prostheses. Flow chart of first periodontal and prosthetic examination. Measuring of basic periodontal indices. Periodontal criteria for the evaluation of abutments. Periodontal and biomechanical criteria for the choice of prosthetic treatment. Radiological examinations as back-up to the diagnosis. Formulation of the treatment plan. Instructions and motivations in oral hygiene. Periodontal pre-treatment. Orthodontic pre-treatment.
Clinical practice: performing of initial examinations, diagnosis and formulation of treatment plan. Initial periodontal preparation.
Fixed prosthesis design principles. Assessment of the abutment teeth, considerations on implant abutments. Periodontal assessment criteria and fundamentals of biomechanics. Partial crowns, total crowns, simple bridges and complex bridges.
Practical activities: radiographic assessment of prosthetic abutments and edentulous ridges, study casts and photographs; formulation of the diagnosis and relative treatment plan.
Principles of teeth preparations. Retention and stability, precision of the finishing line, ideal position of the finishing lines, root profile and emergency profile, instruments.
Technology of the dental materials applied to the prosthesis. Type and characteristics of the alloys used for prostheses. Type and characteristics of the ceramics and new aesthetic materials used for prostheses. Biomechanical considerations on the design of the metal framework and aesthetic coatings to be used in occlusion.
Partial crown preparations. Crowns on cuspidate teeth. Crowns on front teeth. Dentinal retention with parallelizing pins. . Variations of preparations for partial crowns.
Clinical practice: Demonstrations of partial preparations.
Practical activities: normal manichino.
Pre-prosthetic reconstruction of endodontically treated elements. Root posts and plastic materials for the reconstruction of the abutment. Casted posts (direct method and indirect method). Cementing techniques and reconstruction of the abutment.
Practical activities. Reconstruction of endodontically treated teeth.
