ADVANCED CLINICAL MICROBIOLOGY
Learning outcomes of the course unit
Students have to know detailed technical aspects related to the laboratory diagnosis of infections by some selected medically important bacteria, fungi and viruses.
Course contents summary
General characters (morphology, structural and metabolic aspects), pathogenicity and virulence, main laboratory diagnostic aspects of the following bacteria: Enterobacteriaceae, anaerobes and, in particular, Clostridium difficile.
Histopathologic, cultural and serologic approaches for the laboratory diagnosis of:
Mycoses due to dimorphic fungi
Mycoses due to zygomycetes
Infections caused by hepatitis viruses.
Infection caused by Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV.
Infections caused by Human Herpes Virus 5 (Cytomegalovirus), Herpes Simplex Virus and Rubella Virus.
