Learning objectives
At the end of the course, the Students will be able to interpret the geological maps focusing on the reconstruction of the main geological events preserved in the mapped sedimentary successions.

Prerequisites
Basic knowledges on stratigraphy, structural geology and tectonics.

Course unit content

What is a geological map and its importance.

Parts composing the geological maps: the stratigraphic columns and schemes; the legend; the cross-sections; the explanatory notes.

Brief summary of different types of stratigraphic units represented on geological maps: litostratigraphic units; chronostratigraphic units; Unconformity Bounded Stratigraphic Unit.

Other types of stratigraphic units: allostratigraphic units; geochronologic units; biostratigraphic units; magnetostratigraphic and magnetic polarity units; ciclostratigraphic and sequence stratigraphic units.

Interpretation of stratigraphic successions in geological maps (exercises): recognize the main stratigraphic units mapped; reconstruct the depositional environments (deduced by the legend and/or explanatory notes); define main unconformities; identify main transgressions and regressions; recognize the different types of sedimentary basins and reconstruct their evolution.

Geological map of Italy of the series Carta Geologica d'Italia edited by Servizio Geologico d'Italia or Regional Geological Surveys.

Field excursions for analyzing the characters of sedimentary successions outcropping in the Apennines and Southern Alps of Italy.

Teaching methods
Class lessons followed by field lessons on geological evolution of selected area of Apennnines and Southern Alps.
