Course unit content
The frontal teaching activities cover the following diseases: Malignant Lung Tumours; Pneumothorax; Tumours of the Pleura; Pleural Empyema; Tumours of the Mediastinum.
The interactive teaching activities involves the forming of small groups of students which are then brought into direct contact in the wards with pre- and postoperative problems. Prior to the surgical operation, the students become acquainted with the taking of the medical history and with the guided objective examination for the most frequent chest diseases. During the postoperative period, all the measures required for ensuring effective control of the patient are described. The students learn to measure parameters such as arterial pressure, cardiac frequency, respiratory frequency and to perform transcutaneous monitoring of oxygen. They become familiar with the thoracic drainage system and learn how to gather data from it for the purpose of controlling the course of the disease and for interpreting postoperative radiographs. They attend medication procedures and surgical operations.
