Integrated course unit module: LABORATORY MEDICINE

Learning objectives

The students will become familiar with different types of instruments and
techniques needed for the microscopic analysis and cultivation of bacteria, fungi,
parasites and viruses

Prerequisites

Course unit content

The student has to know the laboratory skills to study the morphological and growth
properties of bacteria, fungi, parasites and viruses of medical relevance.
The student has to observe and interpret slides containing bacteria, fungi and
parasites, as well as photographic sheets containing viruses. Moreover, the student
has to observe examples of cultures of bacteria, fungi, parasites and viruses.
The students will become familiar with different types of instruments and
techniques needed for the microscopic analysis and cultivation of bacteria, fungi,
parasites and viruses
Microbiology laboratory training

Professionalizing training: Legend (L): 0: The student has seen the execution, 1: The student has executed at least one time, 2: The student is able to execute autonomously.

CLINICAL MICROBIOLOGY

Prescription of microbiological and virological investigations 2

Interpretation of the report:
microscopic examination for bacteria (Gram staining, Ziehl-Nielsen staining) 2
culture and antibiogram for bacteria 2
serological diagnosis of syphilis 2
for tubercular infection 2
culture and antibiogram for fungi 2
anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies 2
detection of intestinal parasites, Leishmania 2
Execution of the thin smear of peripheral blood 0
for the detection of nucleic acids and antigens of protozoa 2
for the diagnosis of malaria 2
Observation of arthropods and worms (Cestodes, Nematodes) parasites by macroscopic examination 1
Interpretation of the report for the diagnosis:
of viral hepatitis 2
of nucleic acids of hepatitis viruses 2

of anti-hepatitis viruses antibodies 2
for the detection of viruses by electron microscopy, by culture, detection of antigens and nucleic acids of of viruses, HIV 1-2, for the detection of anti-HIV and anti-viruses antibodies 2

- Preanalytical, analytical and postanalytical variability. Condition that can alter the results of the analyses of laboratory; different possibilities of collecting.
- Interpretation of the complete examination of the urines in key of diagnostic use.
- Interpretation of measures of enzymes and isoenzymes, and of other indicators as diagnostic mean in specific pathologies and of organ.
- Alterations biochemical-clinics in the carbohydrate, lipid, purine, electrolytes metabolism, of the parameters of the equilibrium acid-base.
CLINICAL PATHOLOGY
Blood withdrawal 0
To verify whether blood samples are suitable for laboratory examinations 2
To prepare and stain a smear of peripheral blood for microscopical study 2
To perform a differential count of white blood cells on a glass slide of peripheral blood smear at the microscope 1
To identify at the microscope morphologic characteristics of erythrocytes, platelets and leukocytes 2
Interpretation of urinary tests, hemochromocytometric tests, glucidic, lipidic metabolism and of the main neoplastic markers 2
