Learning objectives
At the end of this course, students should be able to:
- Diagnose commonly occurring painful states
- Provide initial treatment of pain, based on conditions and pathophysiology
- Recognize and treat issues with pharmacological and interventional pain management, referring patients to specialists when appropriate

Course unit content
Students will learn about basic acute and chronic diagnosis and treatment. Specific topics will include:
- Pathophysiology of pain
- Commonly occurring acute and chronic painful states
- Drugs commonly used to treat acute and chronic pain
- Elements of interventional pain management
- Elements of legal and organizational issues
