Integrated course unit module: LIFESTYLES AND WELL-BEING

Learning objectives

Learn the most effective cognitive/behavioral interventions to establish lifestyles for best physical and mental development, and maintenance of highest attainable standard of health, fitness and quality of life. Learn the mechanisms by which nutrition and exercise play a key role in promoting wellness. Learn how to prescribe nutrition and physical exercise to prevent major chronic degenerative diseases and disabilities and to delay aging. Learn how to prescribe drug treatment, either alone or with the help of a human nutrition specialist. Learn how to prescribe diet and exercise appropriate for clinical conditions of patient, his/her functional and social development , prevention (primary , secondary and tertiary) and rehabilitation. Learn about doping and how to play an active role in combating it.

Biochemical aspects of food digestion. Biochemistry of foods. Definition of food. Bromatological tables and composition of food. Nutritional needs. Recommended intake levels of key nutrients (LARN and RDA): general principles and epidemiological aspects. Metabolism and energy needs. Calorimetry and physical activity. Energy needs. Recommended intake of carbohydrate, dietary fiber, protein, essential amino acids, lipid, AGE, vitamins and minerals and their biological role in humans. Water and thirst. The nutrients. Classification of foods into functional groups. Portions, cooking techniques and nutritional value. Best distribution of daily calories intake. General principles for prescribing an healthy diet. The Mediterranean model. General principles for prescribing the best diet to patients affected by diseases. Diet and tumors. Foods as carriers of nutrients, anti-nutrients, toxins and carcinogens. Bioactive compounds with protective effects. Functional foods. Principles of chemoprevention.
