Integrated course unit module: PATHOLOGICAL ANATOMY

Learning objectives

The Module of Diagnostic Histopathology is part of the Integrated Course of Surgical Pathology.
The Module aims to provide the student with a direct experience of the notions delivered during frontal lessons, The student will be guided through the interpretation of standard microscopic slides and the diagnostic work-up of a Pathologist.
The Module will help the student in the study of the pathological bases of the diseases and to understand the pathologic approach to the diagnosis.
The student will be asked to integrate the notions provided by the frontal lessons of the Integrated Course of Surgical Pathology to the understanding of;
• the role of the pathologist in the diagnostic process;
• the basic histopathology of common diseseas;
• the elementary differential diagnostic work up of common diseases.
At the end of the course, the student will be able to integrate the knowledge provided with that of other disciplines to:
• interpret a pathology report;
• make elementary correlations between gross and microscopic lesions;
• understand the clinical implications of a pathological diagnosis.

Prerequisites

Basic notions of anatomy, histology and general pathology.

Course unit content

The lessons will consist of practical demonstrations of diagnostic pathology at the microscope. Exemplary slides of diseases discussed in frontal lessons of the Integrated Course of Surgical Pathology will be shown and explained.

Full programme

The slides will be derived from the routine diagnostic practice and will be consistent with the program of the Integrated Course of Surgical Pathology.

Bibliography

Robbins & Cotran, Pathologic basis of diseases, Elsevier, 8° Ed. (specific chapters).
Rubin, Pathology, Mosby 2006 (specific chapters).

Teaching methods

Lessons will be held at the microscope. Through a digital camera, real-time microscopic images will be shown and the student will be guided into the interpretation of elementary pathologic lesions and will be asked to interact with the teacher.

Assessment methods and criteria

The program of the Module will be evaluated during the oral interview of the Integrated Course of Surgical Pathology (see)
