Learning objectives

Provide students with basic theoretical/practical elements to enable them to take a systematic and rational approach to diagnosis and oral rehabilitation therapy with fixed and removable prostheses, both partial and total, so that they are able to design and realise the most commonly used prosthetic devices.

Prerequisites

Have passed all the previous years' exams and the exam in Periodontology and Implan

Course unit content

The first visit: Medical history, objective examination and instrumental examinations. Principles of endo-oral photography applied to prosthetic dentistry. The complete photographic status of the patient with prosthesis. Overview of the clinical and radiographical evaluation criteria of dental elements and edentulous ridges.
Clinical practice on the patient, with performing of the initial visits, photographic examinations and formulation of a complete diagnosis.
Dental study impressions. Materials and execution techniques. Laboratory phases: casting and finishing of the study models.
Clinical practice on the patient during which the student is responsible for taking study impressions, casting the models and trimming them.
Occlusion. Anatomy and physiology of the temporomandibular joint, of the muscles and of the teeth. Occlusal relationships. Anomalies in occlusal relationships. Movement limitations of the temporomandibular joint and their anomalies. Mandibular kinetics. Recording of mandibular movements. Recording of the relationships of the craniomandibular joints. Articulators and face bows.
Practical activities with occlusal wax modelling of dental elements.
Clinical practice on the patient involving taking study impressions, casting and finishing the models, using the face bow, recording centric relation and mounting the models on the articulator.
Removable partial prosthesis.
