Learning outcomes of the course unit
Thecourse provides the basic knowledge required for the usage of the most commonelectrical machine and electric drives.
Course contents summary
Electricmachines classification. The main components of the electric machines.
Joule lossesand iron losses: the efficiency of the electrical machines.
Transformer:ideal transformer and real transformer: no load operations and rated loadoperations.
Voltagedrop, power, losses and efficiency of electrical transformer. Three phasestransformers.
Inductionmachines: mechanical and electrical behaviour. Induction motor start-up andvelocity regulation.
DirectCurrent machines: electrical and mechanical behaviour, start-up and velocityregulation.
PermanetMagnet Synchronous Machines (PMSM): a.c. and d.c. PMSM, electrical and mechanical behaviour.
Permanetmagnet step motor, reluctance step motor and hybrid step motor.
ElectricDrives classification. The main components of electric drives: speed andposition transducers, current transducers. Analog and digital PID regulators,PLC.
Electricdrives based on permanent dc motors: torque control and velocity control.
DCmotor supply: soft switching chopper.
Electricdrives based on PMSM: torque control and velocity control.
Electricdrives based on induction motors: torque and speed control.
Incrementalelectrical drives: basic stepping motor control circuits.
