Learning objectives

The course is aimed at illustrating criteria, methodologies and examples of functional design of food packaging automatic machines. The course is directed to beverage machines, bakery machines and secondary packaging machine, focusing on mechanisms and automation.

Course unit content

<br />First part: <br /> Introduction to modern automation techniques. Standard and special machines: design approaches, costs and usable technologies.<br /><br /> <br />Second part: <br /> Beverage machines: fillers, injection molding systems, rinsers, craters.<br /> Bakery machines: automatic feeders, multipack, flow pack.<br /> Meat machines: cold cuts and slicers.<br /> Form fill seal machines.<br /> Fill and seal wrapper machines.<br /> Dosing systems, labellers, metal detectors and vision systems.<br /> Automation for food industries: standards CEN, FDA and GxP. Software life cycle. Validation procedures and protocols.<br />

Teaching methods

The course is made up by oral lessons, practical lessons and an application project.<br /><br />Practical lessons are organized in collaboration with packaging machine builders.<br /><br />The final grade is calculated as follows: <br />written test on course theory - 50%; <br />application project and oral discussion about it - 50%; <br /><br />A short html presentation of the project is required.The active participation to lectures and other activities is evaluated.<br />
