LABORATORY FOR SENSOR TECHNOLOGIES
Learning outcomes of the course unit
The course aims to provide students with thetheoretical and practical knowledge requested for doing environmentalmonitoring that requires measuring several quantities with tightspatial grids and for long time periods. In this case it's unavoidableto use sensors and computer assisted data acquisition.
Thus there is a first part devoted to measuringelectrical quantities by conventional instrumentation, and a second onedevoted to use sensors, data acquisition boards and PC.
Basic knowledge of electromagnetism, as available from the course 'physicsB'.
Basic Knowledge of informatics.
Course contents summary
1-Direct current circuits.
a) Theory- DC circuits:laws of Ohm, Kirchoff,Joule;instruments for DC electric measurements (Voltmeters,amperometers, analog and digital multimeters);analysis of errors.
b) Lab. practice: I) Verifying Ohm's law and pointing out possible sistematic errors;
II) Measuring aresistor of low ohmic value by 2 and 4 wires circuits.
2- Alternating current circuits.
a) Theory- Analysis of AC circuits; some interestingcircuits:RC,RL, RLC;oscillating circuits and resonance; measuring ACelectric signals; analog and digital oscilloscope.
b) Lab.practice: I) Study of RC and CR circuits using a dual trace analog oscilloscope;
II) Study of resonance inan RLC series circuit.
3- Computer assisted measurements.
a) Theory- How to measure DC and AC signals by ADC data acquisition boards and personal computers.
b) Lab. practice-Measuring DC and AC voltages by conventional instruments and data acquisition boards, andcomparing results.
4- Measuring by sensors.
a) Theory- Sensors for measurements ofenvironmentally important quantities (temperature, pressure, electromagnetic radiations, ionising radiations,...).
b) Lab.practice: I) Measuring temperature by Pt and semiconductor sensors;
II) Measuringthe absorbance of a liquid solution by a laser beam and a fotodiode.
Texts written by the lecturer are provided both for theory and for lab practice.
Every student must produce a written relation abouteach lab. practice.Relations are corrected before the finalexamination, which is only oral, and contribute to the score.
The lab score contributes to the final score of the integrated course "physics B and phys lab".
