Learning objectives

The goal of this course is to Introduce the students to a basic understanding of the hazards and risks evaluation and of the prevention and protection in particular in the chemical laboratories.

<br />Hazards and risks evaluation methodology. Chemicals: physical properties and structure correlations. Parameters for the fire risk evaluation: autoignition temperature, flash point. Fire prevenction and protection, fire estinguishers. Toxicology evaluation, prevention and protection. Chemical hazard classification and labelling in Europe. Material safety data sheets. Safety signs and equipments. Compressed gas cylinder safety. handling and storage. Electrical hazards. Mechanical hazards. Risk evaluation Laws: D. Lgsl. 626/94 and D. Lgsl. 25/02 on chemicals utilization. Web sites on Safety.

Teaching methods

<br />Classroom Lectures will be supplemented with discussions and problem solving. The final evaluation is based on the discussion mainly of specific problems involving an organic solvent. The student must find the relative Material Safety Sheet on the Web.
