Learning objectives

The course will focus on changes in the image of the individual from the Baroque Era to that of Classicism, against a background of related philosophical, religious and literary issues.

Course unit content

The course focuses on the genesis of the modern individual from Montaigne to Rousseau. Against a background of literary genres in France from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment, the course will analyse selected texts by Montaigne and Rousseau, in addition to Racine’s tragedy Phèdre.

Teaching methods
