Learning objectives

The course aims to offer students a panoramic view of British literature in the twentieth century, starting from late Victorian culture, through the Modernist period, and up to contemporary and postmodern literature. At the same time, the course proposes accurate textual readings (with appropriate linguistic and stylistic commentaries) of relevant works, as well as a constant contextualization of literary texts, movements and authors in relation to the historical, ideological-political and cultural transformations of twentieth-century Britain.

Prerequisites

Students must have passed the exams for Letteratura Inglese I and II LT. In addition they are required to have a good working knowledge of the English language at an intermediate/advanced level.

Course unit content

The course examines the development of British literature from the early twentieth century until the 1990s. Particular attention is given to the formal characteristics of the literary text and the stylistic innovations introduced by the various movements and writers, as well as to close interconnections between literature, historical events and  other cultural manifestations. The course is taught in English (with a short general introduction in Italian).
