Course unit structured in the following modules:

Learning objectives

Basic knowledge of mechanisms of response to tissue damage (inflammation, hemostasis, repair) and of their alterations. Elementary knowledge of cell death mechanisms and of basic features of tumor cell biology. Knowledge of the main characteristics of microorganisms and viruses, of their role in natural systems and in relation to the host, as well as of their pathogenic role. Acquisition of terminological competences.

Prerequisites

The preventive acquisition of the competences yielded by the Courses of Anatomy and Histology and of Biosciences is highly recommended before the examination.

Course unit content

<br />The topics covered during the lectures will be: 1. CELL PATHOLOGY: Adaptation to cell damage. Cell death through oncosis and apoptosis. Basic biological features of tumor cells. 2. INFLAMMATION: Signs and phenomena of acute inflammation. Mechanisms of exudation. Phagocytosis. Chronic inflammation and granulomas. Abscesses and ulcers. Chemical mediators of inflammation. Systemic effects of inflammation. Fever. Excesses and defects in inflammatory response. 3. HEMOSTASIS AND BLOOD VESSELS DISEASES: Primary and secondary hemostasis. Hemorrhagic diseases. Thrombosis, embolism, infarction. Ischemic damage and excitotoxicity. Atherosclerosis. 4. BACTERIOLOGY: The prokaryotic cell: general organization, morphology and physiology. Genetics of microorganisms. Metabolism, reproduction and cultivation of microorganisms. The microorganism/host relatioship: commensalism, symbiosis, parasitism. The microbial flora. Pathogenicity and virulence. Transmission of pathogens. VIROLOGY: Definitions. General characteristics of viruses. Chemical composition of virions. The phases of the viral replication process. Cultivation of viruses.
