Learning objectives
At the end of the Course, students must have gained:
1-Knowledge of the fundamental biological principles of the periodontal disease and of the healing process
2-Knowledge of the periodontal disease, the relationship between periodontal disease and systemic diseases and the
need for periodontal treatment in patients affected by systemic diseases.
3-Knowledge of periodontal epidemiology and of the role played by Periodontology in ministerial odontostomatologic
prevention schemes.
Course unit content
1.Functional anatomy of the periodontium, oral cavity and stomatognatic system.
2.Biology of the periodontium and oral cavity.
3.Definition, classification and natural history of periodontal diseases (gingivitis, increases in gingival volume,
aggressive periodontitis, chronic periodontitis in adults, necrotizing periodontitis, periodontitis associated with
systemic diseases).
4.Epidemiology of the periodontal diseases:
. inflammatory periodontal index and need for treatment
. prevalence (age, status etc.)
. risk factors for periodontal disease
. the periodontal disease as a risk factor for other diseases
5.Local etiological factors (dental plaque and calculus)
. formation, structure and localization of the mucobacterial plaque
. calculus mineralisation, composition and structure
. conditions favouring the association of local etiological factors
6.Microbiology of the periodontal disease
. periodontal infections and their characteristics
. individuation of the pathogenic species in the various forms of periodontal disease
. acute manifestations
. gingivitis
. periodontitis
7.Pathogenesis
. host defence mechanisms
. non-specific immune response (PMN, macrophages, phlogosis)
. specific immune response (lymphocyte, humoral and cellular)
. histopathology of lesions
. initial, early, stabilized, advanced lesion
8.Host susceptibility
. individual response
. risk factors
9.Clinics of the periodontal disease
. gingivitis
. increases in gingival volume
. clinical manifestations of periodontitis (pockets, gingival recessions, formation lesions, mobility, migrations,
abscess)
. chronic periodontitis
. necrotizing periodontitis
. periodontitis associated with systemic diseases
10.Occlusal trauma
. definition and terminology
. relationship between occlusal trauma and periodontitis
11.Relationship between periodontology and endodontics
. primary endodontic lesions
. endo-periodontal lesions
. endodontic lesions secondary to periodontal disease or treatment
12.Relationship between periodontal disease and systemic diseases
13.Periodontal manifestations in dermatological diseases
14.Reactive hyperplasia, cysts and periodontium neoplasia
15.Basic and advanced periodontal diagnosis
. medical history
. clinical examination
. survey
. examination RX
. immunological and biochemical laboratory tests
. microbiological tests
. genetic tests.
