HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY (UNIT A)
Learning outcomes of the course unit
The course aims to provide students with the basic methodological tools required in order to approach the study of photography, along with adequate knowledge of the main events that have marked its history, examined through the work of significant photographers. In addition, the course aims to provide students with the theoretical tools necessary for a proper analysis of the relationship between photography and other artistic expressions around which their study programme centres.
Course contents summary
The course is structured in 2 modules:
In the first module, students will be provided with a methodological introduction to the historical-critical study of photography, whose history will be examined, from its onset to the most recent developments, through the work of the most important photographers and movements.
The second module will look more closely at the relationship between photography and figurative arts, a theme that has been hotly debated since the very origins of the history of photography, concentrating on moments of special interest in this regard and examining this relationship from a theoretical standpoint too

Arturo Carlo Quintavalle, Messa a fuoco. Studi sulla fotografia, Feltrinelli, Milano, 1983 (Introduction, pages XI – LIX)
Non-attending students are required to study the abovementioned texts in order to take the exam.
With regard to module B, lecture notes are essential for attendees to prepare for the exam. In any case, a reading list regarding the specific topics discussed will be provided during the course.
Non-attending students, in contrast, are required to study:

Arturo Carlo Quintavalle, Messa a fuoco. Studi sulla fotografia, Feltrinelli, Milano, 1983 (Introduction, pages 93-133)
In any case, students unable to attend the lectures should contact the professor in order to discuss the exact study programme to follow in order to prepare for the exam.
