Learning objectives

Practical competences about clinical pathology and diagnostic procedures in the laboratory of internal medicine. The student must collaborate and perfome directly the exams in order to acquire a sufficient "day one" skill.  

Prerequisites

Acquired knowledge about physical examination, internal medicine, clinical pathology and diagnostic procedures.

Course unit content

Competences in clinical pathology and diagnostic procedures by the execution and interpretation of laboratory investigations. The results of the investigations must be coupled with the clinical evidences recorded in the case report of the animal. Blood cell count and cell differentiation. Substrates and enzymes determination by spectrophotometry. Protein migrations. Microscopic, staining and biochemical exams. Urinanalisys. Esams on cerebrospinal fluid. Parasites in feces and blood. Serology for the main infectious and parasitic disease of pets. Exams and intepretation of metabolic profiling in cattle and swine. Ruminal content esamination. Checking-in of the samples and delivery of the results.

Teaching methods

Execution and interpretation of laboratory exams under the supervision of the professor. Discussion about the applied methods and the obtained results in combination with the clinical case.
