Integrated course unit module: CHEMISTRY AND BIOCHEMISTRY (ATT)

Learning objectives
To be able to discuss the mechanisms of delivery and expression of the genetic information at molecular level. To be able to describe the characteristics, the function and the metabolic role of the major molecular constituents of the cell (proteins, nucleic acids, enzymes and co-enzymes, vitamins), and the mechanisms of production of the metabolic energy.

Prerequisites
It is mandatory to pass the exam of Histology before being allowed to take the exam of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Course unit content
Proteine: composizione e struttura. Proteine del tessuto connettivo, del plasma e proteine coniugate d'interesse biomedico. Emoglobina e trasporto dell'ossigeno.
Enzimi e cinetica enzimatica. Coenzimi utilizzati nelle reazioni metaboliche. Vitamine: azione biochimica.
Basi molecolari dell'informazione ereditaria. Composizione e struttura degli acidi nucleici. Replicazione del DNA. Telomerasi. La riparazione del DNA e sue correlazioni con patologie umane, con l'invecchiamento cellulare e con il cancro. RNA: struttura, funzione, trascrizione, maturazione. Codice genetico e sue proprietà. Sintesi proteica, regolazione dell'espressione genica e destino post-sintetico delle proteine. La trasduzione del segnale. Apoptosi. Il differenziamento. Clonazione.
