<br />To achieve:<br />a) a basic knowledge of the anatomy of the eye and of the dioptric system.<br />b) To achieve a basic knowledge of the physiology of visual system and to study more in depth some visual submodality

Course unit content

<br />Sense organs: general notions of ear anatomy. Visual apparatus: bulb of the eye. Conformation of the bulb of the eye. Fibrous tunic, vascular tunic and nervous tunic. Optic nerve. Eye dioptric system. General vascular organisation. Accessory organs of the bulb of the eye. Orbital cavity. Orbital fat body. Fibrous annexa, motor apparatus and protection apparatus of the bulb of the eye. Lacrimal apparatus. Development of visual apparatus<br /> <br />Anatomy and physiology of the retina. Functions of photoreceptors, bipolar and ganglion cells. Anatomy and physiology of visual pathways: superior colliculus, nuclear geniculate body, visual cortex. Magno- and parvocellular pathway. Simple and complex cells. Modular organization of V1. Higher order visual areas: perception of color, movement and shape.
