Learning objectives

The purpose of the course is to provide notions about blood group systems, transfusional therapy and the elements necessary for the use of blood components.

Course unit content

The Blood. Blood composition. Blood cells. Haematopoiesis and haematopoietic cytokines.<br />
Blood group systems. The ABO blood group system. The Rh blood group system. Other blood group systems.<br />
Haemolytic disease of the newborn. <br />
Basic knowledge on the taking of a blood sample and general donor requirements.<br />
Blood components and plasma by-products: properties, directions for use, preparation procedures and preservation. <br />
Complications following blood transfusion and their handling.<br />
Alternative to blood transfusion.<br />
Bone marrow transplantation.
