The course aims to give at the student a specific knowledge of biotechnological techniques applied to morphological and functional study of tissues, in particular bone tissue.

Osteoblasts and osteocytes: structural and functional characteristics
Osteoclasts: structural and functional characteristics
Remodeling and repairing dynamics
Structural organisation of bone tissue.
Biomaterials employed in orthopaedic and dental field:
Biotechnological approaches in the biomaterial research.
Current legislation on animal experimentation.
Experimental protocols for evaluation of osteointegration.
Methods for the osteintegration evaluation:
Polarized light microscopy analysis
Bone vital markers
Histochemical and immunohistochemical reactions.
Practical part: -
The practical activity will focused on:
Histological techniques for processing undecalcified bone tissue with implants for the evaluation of osteointegration
Histolgical stains, histochemical and himmunohistochemical reactions
Observation of histological sections by polarizing light and fluorescence optical microscope
Digitalization and image analysis.
The didactical material, consisting of scientific publications and experimental protocol, will be provided during the course.
