Learning objectives

By studying the sources of some crucial moments in the evolution of European law, the course aims to provide a panorama of the ideas underlying the current conception of so-called civil law and to stimulate students' critical capacities when reading texts.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of private law, particularly as regards obligations, contractual responsibility and bailment (also in relation to Roman law) Elementary elements of European history, at the start of the nineteenth century.

Course unit content

<p>Through an analysis of texts and documents, students will follow the evolution of private law in continental Europe, from the revival of legal science around the end of the 11th century to the historical-legal foundations of the period of codifications, with particular reference to some principles of private law. <br />
