Learning objectives

To make the students acquainted with the application of heat transfer principles to the processes involved in engineering applications. Part of the course is devoted to numerical analysis applied to fluid flow and heat transfer problems. In order to prepare the students in making the necessary connection between conceptual principles and their actual application, this part of the course avails itself of computer laboratory lectures. The programming environment used is the Matlab and Femlab software.

Prerequisites

General Physics.

Course unit content

Heat Transfer. Conduction, Convection, Radiation Heat Transfer. Basic laws and conservation equations.<br /><br />Steady state conduction<br />Steady state conduction in multi dimensional systems. Internal heat generation.<br /><br />Transient conduction<br />Transient conduction. The lumped capacitance method. Spatial effects. The plane wall and radial systems with convection: exact solution and graphical representation. The semi-infinite solid. Multidimensional effects. <br /><br />Convection<br />Applicative examples regarding convection problems: internal and externalconvection, free convection in cavities. Dynamical and thermal boundary layer. <br /><br />Numerical Analysis<br />Finite difference method appplied to the analysis of conduction probelma : the explicit and implicit formulations.<br />Finite element method applied to diffusion and convection problems.
