The course aims to present the operational principles, main analysis tools and design techniques of analog and digital communication systems.

Course contents summary
Lowpass equivalent representation of bandpass signals, random processes and systems.
Amplitude modulation (AM): expression of modulated signal, evaluation of spectrum, bandwidth, and transmitted power. DSB and SSB modulations. Detection of AM signals. Detection in the presence of phase and frequency errors. Carrier recovery for AM signals. Frequency modulation (FM) and phase modulation (PM). Bandwidth and average transmitted power. Detection of FM and PM signals. The phase-locked loop (PLL). Frequency division multiplexing (FDM). Performance evaluation: signal-to-noise ratio.
Pulse code modulation (PCM) and quantization noise. Time division multiplexing (TDM). Baseband digital transmission and Pulse amplitude modulation (PAM). Matched filter. Error probability for binary and M-ary signalling. Nyquist pulse. Intersymbol interference. Eye diagrams. Equalization. Bandpass digital transmission.
