Learning outcomes of the course unit
The objective of the course is to provide the basic knowledge of soil mechanics and hydraulics, describing the soil hydro-mechanical behaviour and illustrating the most common characterization tests.
Some problems related to the study and safeguard of the environment are then discussed with primary emphasis on their geotechnical aspects. In particular are examined applications such as: slope stability analysis methodologies, retaining structures design criteria and foundation engineering problems.
The course will include application examples and exercises on the application of the theory.

General characterization and soil classification;
Pore pressure, Effective stresses theory and state of stress in soils;
Groundwater and pore pressure;
Oedometric behaviour of soils;
Shear behaviour of clays and sands;
Deformability of soils;
On site investigation and testing for mechanical and hydraulic characterization of soils;
Slope stability analysis, retaining structures and foundation design theory.
