Learning objectives

The course has been designed to offer students a general overview of the thousand-year output of Classic Latin within a predominantly European setting. Having defined a frame of reference through the choice of a century, a genre, an author and one of his works, the intent is to cross the diachronic and synchronic levels and through this provide a method and material for comprehending an extended period in Western history and an important segment of its culture.

Prerequisites

<br />As a course requirement, general knowledge of Latin literature and the principal features that define the era of the Late Antique period is recommended. In particular, mastery of the basic morpho-syntactic structures of Latin   is requested.

A. Overview of Latin literature in the Middle Ages. B. The literary output of 6th, 7th and 8th century. C. Prologi’s anthology: reading, analysis and comment of the “Saints Lives” genre. </p>

Teaching methods

Classroom lectures, synoptic reading of works by different authors, but whose nature and contents are homogeneous. The evaluation consists of an oral exam.
