ECONOMIC GEOGRAPHY (UNIT B)
Learning outcomes of the course unit
The course’s objective is to highlight systems of spatial observation at different geographical scales, from global to local, imparting skills in the analysis of the contemporary world’s principal economic and social characteristics and problems from a geographical point of view.
Course contents summary
The course will illustrate the characteristic features of the geographical viewpoint as regards the analysis of economic and social phenomena, by means of a thematic approach. The course will be divided into two units:
- the first will concern fundamental concepts in economic geography (horizontal and vertical relations, economic region etc.), the classical approach and modelling techniques applied to different localized functions and strategies, and the concept of sustainable development;
- the second unit will look at the relationship between the territorial dimension and economic development, the concept of local development, the question of development and under-development, and methods of territorial promotion.
