Learning objectives

The course objective is to supply basic knowledge on materials and products for building and on the elements that comprise construction systems, introducing an understanding of the role of technology in architectural design. The study will be carried out through the analysis of projects created to bring the student to an understanding of the motivations underlying each design choice. In particular, in order to develop a critical attitude towards technology, the aim is to supply tools for choosing materials and construction techniques for the various scales of the project and in the various process phases. The building process will be understood, among other things, as a system of decision-making and information. At the end of the course, the student should be able to: understand and describe the technical solutions of a building; define technical solutions of construction elements and their relative details; correlate the design graphics documentation to the construction element scale and relative details, with the site operations; interpret the technical information on materials and products, for the purposes of technological planning.

Teaching methods

The course consists of two parts. The first part is developed through theoretical lectures that fully outline the theories and practices envisaged in architecture-specific techniques. Part of the lectures is focused on the analysis of projects that are di<br />
The final mark will result from the final discussion during which will assess the preparation of each student on the subjects covered by: The lectures; the integrations of and the teaching material prepared with reference to the lectures; by the texts reported in the bibliography. The work done throughout the extempore project exercises will also be assessed. For non-attending students, the examination will focus on the topics covered by the texts reported in the recommended bibliography.
