Learning objectives

The course aims to expose students to the history of German by providing them with an overview of the history of said languages and of the peoples who speak them and spoke them in former times.

Prerequisites

Active knowledge of at least one modern Germanic language. Knowledge of a second Germanic language, including passive knowledge only, is recommended although not essential.

Course unit content

Definition of the discipline. Germanic in the context of Indo-European languages; apophony and the seven classes of strong verbs. The second consonant shift of Old High German. Phenomena of metaphony and of fracture in the context of Germanic languages.

Bibliography

The reference textbook is Manuale di Linguistica Germanica by M. Saibene and M. Buzzoni (Cisalpino, Milano, 2008). Further reading may be recommended during the lessons.

Teaching methods

The course is taught through traditional methods through blackboard examples supplemented by geographical/linguistic maps and charts. The exams are oral.
