Learning objectives

In unit A, the course has been designed to provide both the literary and linguistic bases of Romance philology, indispensable for students in the Literary Culture course; through the analysis of a specific text, the more specialised unit B will provide students with the methodological tools they require for independent study of Old French literature and textual criticism.

Course unit content
French fiction: the Folies Tristan.
Following an outline of the oldest French Tristanian novels, the course will examine the Folies Tristan, two short poems from the late 12th century that form an admirable synthesis of the famous legend. The course will be supplemented by a historical profile of the grammar of Old French.
The course is divided into two units: Unit A: primarily introductory in nature, with readings of a number of extracts of the Folies and elements of the history of Old French grammar; unit B: a specialised unit on the Folies Tristan and more in-depth study of grammatical history.
