Learning objectives

Besides transmitting, consolidating and expanding notions about writers and works from the period stated above, the course aims at enriching the critical approach to literary texts and facilitating their comprehension in the original language.

Prerequisites

Being addressed to first year students, the course requires no specialized preparation in the field of English literature. Even a basic knowledge of the English language, though obviously helpful, is not a requisite when attending lessons (but it will be so, when taking the exam). Students are expected to have some basic knowledge in connected disciplines, such as history or modern and classical literature.

Course unit content

<br />
The course provides an outline of the history of English literature from the Middle Ages to the Restoration (1660). It also introduces a substantial number of texts by representative authors which are critically investigated and historically contextualized.

Teaching methods

The course consists of didactic units which ultimately aim at developing specific abilities in the critical appreciation of literary texts in English. Consequently, assessment takes into consideration linguistic and critical skills and students' ability to assimilate, elaborate and select notions.
